Claire Reed is a visual artist based in Barcelona who paints with oils, using a Zorn palette on large sheets of stone paper. She combines abstract expressionism with figurative elements, drawing inspiration from Romanesque statuary, from figures in frescoes that suddenly emerge from beneath layers of paint or plaster, worn and tarnished by time, and from landscapes that appear and vanish in mist and shadow. She aims to explore mystery, poetry, mood, and narrative potential in her paintings.
She also works with collages made from her drawings, paintings, and photographs, using transparent papers and photocopies, incorporating these images into found objects to produce three-dimensional works of art and light boxes.
Claire studied English Literature at the University of Sheffield and Creative Writing at the University of Northumbria. Her current practice deepened at the workshop-studio of the artist Ingrid Garcia Moya when she began experimenting with pitch, oils, and wax. She later substituted canvas for stone paper, an innovative, environmentally friendly, and sustainably produced paper substitute.
Her solo exhibition Sobre/Impressions Pedra, Paper, Palimpsest, was attended by nearly 600 people in Calisay Cultural Centre, Arenys de Mar, Barcelona, in November 2022.
Her current installation, Altres Belleses, Marques, fissures i esquerdes, which explores the visual and emotional impact of the damaged, imperfect, and restored, with the jeweller Cló Quintero, can be seen at CC Pere Pruna between 13th November and 5th December 2025. It includes an individual exhibition of a collection of twelve original paintings, Omplir les esquerdes amb Llum, exhibited in the Sala Gran.
Her ongoing project investigates mending techniques through a series of paintings exploring damage, rupture, and repair in human bodies, minds, and hearts, both individually and collectively.
